DESCRIPTION

Join us for a one of a kind event designed to help you relax and revive this winter! Set in the majestic Santa Cruz mountains, 10 minutes outside downtown Los Gatos, the Burrell School Vineyards is opening its historic school house for a one-of-a kind fireside yoga experience!

Our event will begin with a 60 minute Hatha / Relaxing yoga session in the Burrell School schoolhouse. This unique session will aim bring awareness to our “agni” or inner fire through a gentle flow, torso stimulating postures, breath work, meditation and deep relaxation. Harnessing your inner fire can provide you with confidence, clarity and motivation at times when the rainy, winter months can leave you feeling sluggish.

With our body and awareness more in-tune, you will then enjoy a 60 minute tasting that includes three red wines and two whites of our vintners choosing. On theme with the event, the staff will aim to help you explore more subtle notes of taste within the varietals of wine and broaden your understanding of how to pair wines and improve upon the tasting experience.

Personal Side Note on Yoga & Alcohol:
I want to ensure those yoga purists that I have thought deeply about the pairing of yoga with alcohol on more than on occasion. Is it appropriate / what does it mean? Isn’t alcohol abstained from in Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga? Should I even entertain the idea?

I want to be clear that I do not promote heavy drinking in collaboration with yoga. I also understand yoga is part of a recovery process for many struggling with addiction and deeply bow to those who have found and steer that path daily. I admit I’m also a bit of a snob about events like "yoga with goats" or "beer yoga" where you drink or are otherwise distracted by some "froofy" fad while practicing. When you’re doing yoga - just do yoga.

In this instance, I do think there is an argument that some people can tap into more subtle aspects of sensation (taste, smell, sight, texture) that can be explored through this experience. I also love that this event is aimed at exploring a location and a culture with rich history and tradition. Lastly, I think a lot of our practice is about helping us slow down and notice the more subtle notes of our life. We don’t want to just guzzle down decades of life and get to the end and wonder what happened / where all the time went - do we? Nor do we want to do this with wine. This experience is about slowing down and noticing subtle layers of depth and flavor. It’s about really taking the time to taste, talk, smile and savor the joys of meeting new people in new places. Every event we have held at the Burrell School, guests end up mingling, chatting up people they’ve never met and this is the type of environment I’m hoping to foster.

So if you are a fellow yoga nerd like me, and had an eyebrow raised - well, there's my thoughts on it.
